TIPS: Writing a Comic

  1. Understand the Medium: Comics are a visual storytelling medium, so it's important to understand the unique aspects of sequential art. Study the work of experienced comic writers and analyze how they use panel layouts, pacing, and dialogue to tell engaging stories.

  2. Visualize the Story: Since comics rely heavily on visuals, it's crucial to think visually when crafting your story. Visualize the scenes, characters, and action in your mind and consider how they can be effectively translated into panels and pages.

  3. Master Panel-to-Panel Transitions: The flow from one panel to the next is essential in comics. Pay attention to the transitions between panels to create a smooth and coherent reading experience. Experiment with different transitions, such as action-to-action, scene-to-scene, or moment-to-moment, to achieve the desired pacing and impact.

  4. Balance Dialogue and Visuals: Comics strike a delicate balance between dialogue and visual storytelling. Avoid overcrowding panels with excessive dialogue and allow the visuals to carry part of the storytelling burden. Use dialogue strategically to enhance characterization, convey emotions, or provide essential information.

  5. Use Thumbnails and Storyboards: Before diving into the final artwork, create rough thumbnails or storyboards to plan out the layout and composition of each page. This helps you visualize the sequential flow and make any necessary adjustments to pacing, framing, or visual storytelling.

  6. Collaborate with the Artist: If you're working with an artist, maintain open communication and collaborate closely throughout the process. Provide clear script directions, but also give the artist creative freedom to contribute their visual expertise and interpretation of the story.

  7. Experiment with Panel Layouts: Panels come in various shapes and sizes, and their arrangement on the page can greatly impact the storytelling. Explore different panel layouts and compositions to create dynamic and visually engaging pages. Consider using varied panel shapes, sizes, and placements to evoke specific moods or emphasize important moments.

  8. Show, Don't Tell: Comics are a visual medium, so strive to show actions, emotions, and events through visuals rather than relying solely on exposition or narration. Let the artwork and the characters' expressions convey information and engage the reader's imagination.

  9. Plan for Page Turns: Page turns in comics can be used as a powerful storytelling tool. Consider the impact of a dramatic reveal or a cliffhanger at the end of a page, as it encourages readers to turn the page and builds anticipation.

  10. Edit and Revise: Like any form of writing, editing is crucial in comic storytelling. Review your script multiple times, focusing on clarity, pacing, and coherence. Trim unnecessary dialogue or panels that don't contribute to the story's flow. Seek feedback from trusted peers or editors to gain fresh perspectives.

Remember, writing comics requires a combination of storytelling, visual thinking, and collaboration. Embrace the unique nature of the medium and continue to learn and improve your craft by studying and practicing the art of comic writing.

RAGE IN THE SWAMP: SHORT STORY

by Tardigrade Press

In the heart of a dense, mysterious swamp nestled between towering trees and murky waters, there lived an angry Sasquatch. Towering over eight feet tall, with a hulking physique covered in matted fur, this solitary creature had a reputation for being elusive and fierce.

For years, a peaceful farmhouse near the swamp had fallen victim to a series of bizarre incidents. Chickens would vanish without a trace, leaving behind only scattered feathers as evidence of their untimely demise. The bewildered farmer, named John, was at a loss to explain the inexplicable occurrences.

One fateful evening, John decided to confront the source of his misfortune. Armed with a flashlight and a trembling resolve, he ventured into the depths of the swamp. As he cautiously navigated the treacherous terrain, his heart raced with a mix of fear and determination.

Suddenly, John spotted a pair of glowing eyes peering at him from the shadows. It was the angry Sasquatch, its massive frame camouflaged amongst the dense foliage. Its wild gaze burned with a fiery intensity, reflecting the rage that fueled its relentless chicken-hunting spree.

Driven by desperation, the Sasquatch lunged forward, but John managed to evade its wrath with a nimble sidestep. In that moment, an unexpected connection formed between man and beast. Instead of succumbing to fear, John realized the Sasquatch's actions were driven by hunger and a desire to survive.

With newfound empathy, John cautiously approached the creature, extending an offering of fresh vegetables and fruits. The Sasquatch cautiously sniffed the peace offering, its eyes shifting from suspicion to curiosity. It accepted the offering and, over time, a bond of trust began to form.

No longer fueled by anger, the Sasquatch abandoned its chicken-hunting ways, becoming a protector of the swamp and its inhabitants. It would occasionally visit John's farmhouse, sharing moments of silent understanding.

News of the Sasquatch's transformation spread throughout the region, captivating the hearts and minds of those who heard the tale. The angry Sasquatch had become a symbol of redemption, proving that even the fiercest of creatures could find peace and understanding.

And so, the legend of the once-angry Sasquatch and its unlikely friendship with John became an enduring story, whispered around campfires and passed down through generations. It served as a reminder that compassion and understanding could heal even the deepest wounds, bridging the divide between man and beast in the most unexpected ways.
